Black Screen of Death

Encountered a Black Screen of Death with a client pc, that I haven't been able to fix - going to require reinstall of Vista. Installing a second hd with software, scanned the drive and found 937 infected files (with Avira). Yuck. Still couldn't access the drive with Vista explorer.

The good new - using SLAX, I was able to open the document directories, and found the files still intact. Still haven't been able to copy the files yet, but working on that.

I'd like to just load PCLinuxOS for the guy - give him a more trouble free, low maintenance experience. I wonder if he could handle it?

I installed a separate HD with XP, and put the files on a backup drive (on sale for $50 at Radio Shack Memorial Day sale), and ordered re-install disks from HP.
After a weekend of updating, it's now at Vista SP2 and running better than original.
Installed Avira personal, and put the files back on.

Getting used to using your keyboard exclusively and leaving your mouse behind will make you much more efficient at performing any task on any Windows system. I use the following keyboard shortcuts every day:

Windows key + R = Run menu

This is usually followed by:

Fix that worked for me (XPSP3)

1. Download older Update Agent

2. Make a shortcut to the .exe file

3. Right Click the shorcut - select properties

4. On the Shortcut tab, add /wuforce after the path in the Target (example:"...\WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe" /wuforce"

5. Run Update - It will act like "Microsoft Update" was never added.

Windows will notify you that the expiration process is beginning and two weeks later your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. The Beta expires on August 1, 2009, and bi-hourly shutdowns will begin July 1, 2009. The RC will expire June 1, 2010, and the bi-hourly shutdowns will begin on March 1, 2010. AVG Antivirus vs. ClamWin

I have been using ClamWin now for a year or so. I liked the fact that it has a smaller footprint.

I was getting ready to try AVG Free again, when I noticed in the license that it was only free for personal use, and specifically excluded non-profit businesses from the license.

I get excluding business, but why Non-Profits? Just feeling uncharitable?
ClamWin is a Sourceforge open source project.

Anyway, no infections using ClamWin, so I continue on.

In addition, I use:
Windows Firewall (installed by default on XP and up)

Firefox and Chrome
